Starting in the early 1900's in
Ireland, the wives of Irish fishermen would knit their husbands sweaters.
These sweaters came to be known as Aran sweaters, named for the island.
There are more then 2 dozen different stitches used to knit these sweater.
Each stitch has a different meaning, some religious and some

Honeycomb stitch standing for good luck and safety, the Cable or
Rope stitch also standing for good luck and safety and the Moss stitch
standing for wealth.
